Made my way back for sunrise at Mammoth Lakes Hot Springs 🏞🌄 for this week’s new video (link in bio). I think this scene looked best in a 2x1 aspect vertical panorama with the hot water running through the open field. Swipe ➡️ to see the full crop.
Some intricate details of a dying tree. I like the way the patterns, cracks, and color of the wood looks like a painting, with some of the areas reflecting just a little shade of blue from the clear sky overhead. This was from my first hike of our trip to the John Muir wilderness on an otherwise bright and sunny day. A lot of the views were in very harsh light, but thankfully this small area was still in shade and allowed all the details to show up in this image.
Some smaller scenes found while hiking 11 miles into the Sierra Nevada mountains. Link in bio for the video of the hike to one of my favorite alpine lakes in the John Muir wilderness! Day 1 of this trip was more of a hike and day of exploration, and the next few days were great opportunities for some sunrise photos 🌅🏔👍
Some ocean art to start the weekend. After a busy week it was great to start the morning with a cup of coffee and explore some low tide finds along the coast. The retreating tide leaves abstract patterns in the sand as it flows around stones and drains out into the sea. No video this week, since I’m frankly too burned out with work and recent travel. These kinds of simple, plan-free, close to home photo outings one of my favorite ways for resetting and unwinding! 👍🌊
The final part of my latest YouTube series focused on spring in the Appalachian mountains is now up! This was probably my favorite photo of the 4 day trip. On a morning hike in a new dense forested area, waves of fog rolled through at sunrise, casting beams of light throughout the trees.
After deciding that 6 wet miles of hiking was enough, I nearly stepped right on this patch of turkey rails and lichen as I made my way through the woods. Thankfully, I thought to look down! The way these turkey tails were growing on just one side of the log looked really interesting, and their orange/brown color provided some contrast to the light blue/green of the lichen. This image is a 3 photo focus stacked blend to make sure the entire group of mushrooms and lichen are in focus - a bit of a challenge when using a long zoom lens pointed straight down from shoulder height! I’ve not used the semi macro capability of the 100-400mm zoom, but this find had me looking at details a bit more closely these days 😎👍. Do you own a macro lens?
After trying to find the right horizontal composition of this waterfall, I hiked further away and brought more elements into this vertical composition (second falls, ferns). I was really surprised how different this spot looks by just taking 15 steps away from where I had just been before! Swipe ➡️ to see the whole view.
The second part of my latest YouTube series focused on spring in the Appalachian mountains is now up! For this first part I was able to find a new hike that I hadn’t tried before, knowing that the recent rains would lead to strong water levels in the creeks nearby. This trail had a waterfall I wanted to photograph slightly differently than others had done, but I found the location more challenging than I’d expected! Great spring night for sunset in the Appalachian mountains. The sky cast a watercolor orange and pink color across lake, which reflected perfectly in the glass-still surface. I just had to fly the drone up to get this aerial view 👍 🌅 .
